$3,000 for Red Cross Haiti Relief earns a visit from the Red Cross

More than two months after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the need for support is still dire. In response, students at Harbor raised $3,000 to donate to Haiti relief.

Madame Chiet supervised upper school and lower school “Canteen Nights,” where students brought donations for the Haiti relief effort and enjoyed entertainment and refreshments. The two canteen nights along with a portion of our Change for Change box resulted in $2,200.

Second grade student Dina Clemente, who turned 8 years old last month, asked that guests at her birthday party bring donations to the Red Cross in lieu of gifts. The result was a separate donation of $800. The checks were presented to representatives of the Suffolk County Chapter of the American Red Cross at an all-school meeting this week.  Dina and Harbor received Certificates of Appreciation from the Red Cross for their outstanding contribution to the Disaster Relief Fund for Haiti.

Craig Cooper, Public Affairs Lead for the Suffolk County Red Cross and Tembi Jenkins, Regional Administrator for the Babylon/Islip area spoke to Harbor students about: March is Red Cross Month, Clara Barton, emergency preparedness, Red Cross in Haiti and local volunteerism.  Ms. Poletti, our Director of Technology who is also a local Red Cross volunteer created the presentation and showed us a video of the Red Cross helping the people of Haiti.  We even recruited a few more Red Cross volunteers during the presentation.

Parents are able to download Red Cross emergency preparedness handouts from the parent portal of our website.
