Building Expansion Project Update

Last week, we witnessed a big (or should I say tall) progress update with the building expansion project. As you can see from the photo, our elevator shaft was constructed! The foundation work is being finalized soon in preparation for steel framing. The plan is for all of this to be delivered in the next few weeks, at which time the building will take shape. There have been some delays; however, weather permitting, we will be able to get back on schedule once this phase is complete.

2025 Harbor Spring Benefit - Head of School Speech (Excerpt)

This week, the elevator shaft was completed – and it looks awesome! And while I want each of us to take note of every aspect and facet of this majestic new wing, let's focus our attention for a moment on the centerpiece – Harbor's new STEAM Center. It will, indeed, be an innovation space like no other. It will be an inspired place where students can ideate, prototype, build, create, and engineer new inventions of their own. It's going to be a laboratory for solving problems that exist in our world – problems that kids care deeply about – and we will focus on beginning from a place of empathy. This is the key to tapping into our students' thinking skills so that they can become the most influential and confident learners and leaders.

I also ask that we all take this moment to recognize and celebrate each and every new space in this more than 10,000-square-foot expansion. It clearly houses much more than a STEAM Center. It will be a place for kids to embrace their love of literature in our new library. A place for leadership and public speaking to be on display in our convocation hall. A place for our science, art, music, math, English, and History curricula to become more visible. A place where every child at Harbor, from our pre-schoolers to our upper schoolers, can find joy in learning. A place where our mission will come alive in ways we haven't yet imagined or dreamed of.

February 4, 2025 - Great progress continues to be made with our building expansion project. The theme over the past several weeks has been creating support structures. I encourage you to take a look at the newest photos to see just how impressive our construction team at Metro has been. From the footings to the preparations for steel framing to the backfilling, we are beyond impressed with the many ways the crew has navigated the winter weather in an effort to maintain the project timeline.

Finally, we were able to create a dedicated pathway for our students to go to and from recess each day. By utilizing a high-grade, specialized turf, students are back to enjoying outdoor recess. We are certainly well on our way!

January 21, 2025 - In recent weeks, there has been much progress during this critical phase of construction. The foundation forms were created, and despite the weather conditions, the concrete company was able to send an extraordinary pumping machine on site! As you can see, the crew was able to pour the concrete that created the lower-level walls of the new building. This is significant in that we are now that much closer to being able to begin steel fabrication and framing in the weeks ahead.

We are incredibly pleased to share the latest images of the progress made on our building expansion project. While we were all enjoying vacation and family time, a number of concrete experts were carefully crafting the footings that form the foundation of the new wing! If you look carefully, you will notice the outline of the building footprint as well as the rebar that will hold the walls of the lower level.

Much like the investment you each make in your child’s foundational education, we are solidifying the base of this new space that will ultimately house Harbor’s premier program for years to come.

Metro Construction completes demolition of Tulip Knoll's "80s Wing" in three days time!

After ten years of planning and collaborating with many Harbor supporters, and the Village of Head of the Harbor, we are finally taking the first steps in our building expansion project. Harbor is so fortunate to have had an incredibly successful capital campaign which raised the funds necessary for this project. It is with an abundance of gratitude that we recognize all of those who generously contributed to making this dream a reality.

This page has been created with the intention of keeping our community apprised of the progress of this project. Be sure to check back regularly and be on the lookout for formal email updates along the way. Should you have any questions, or if you'd like to support this endeavor, please contact Harbor's Director of Advancement, Jennifer Taggart. Thank you.
