After School Activities Winter 2018

Winter 2018 Club Brochure

• Our Winter session begins the week of January 8th, 2018.

• Student absences cannot be made up or refunded. In the event of a school closure due to inclement weather, or a program teacher’s absence, one make-up class will be held at the end of the session.

• Each k-8th grade club begins at 3:30 p.m. in the dining room with a healthy snack provided by the program. At 3:45 p.m., students will be picked up by the program teacher and escorted to their clubs classroom.

• Parent pick-up promptly at 4:45 p.m. in the main hallway. There will be a $15 fee billed for pick-ups after 4:45 p.m.

• Preschool clubs will begin at 3pm and end at 3:30pm. Parent pick-ups at the 3:30 dismissal time.

The cost for each activity is $150 per session, unless otherwise noted. Preschool programs will be $75 per session and run from 3:00 to 3:30. Some activities also have material fees. Please make checks payable to Harbor Country Day School.

Students who stay after school for a club may go to After School Child Care on the day the club meets.

Baking Coach

Grades: K-5

Come check out the Baking Coach. Taking students further into culinary adventure. Build on your skills or join anew. During this workshop, you will learn how to make sweet and savory treats. In addition to learning cooking and baking techniques, you will learn how math and science apply to baking. Each student will receive a disposable apron and chef’s hat to wear during the program. *Please note that there is an extra $20.00 material fee.*


Tuesday

Chess Scholars

Instructor: Afterschool Enrichment Solutions Grades: K-8

Chess Scholars’ training program is based on a unique system with a gradual step by step increase in the difficulty of the material. Children quickly learn the rules of chess, enhance their understanding of the game and take them to a higher skill level. We will split the group into two parts, when the students’ range of skill is too wide.


Pilates

The Pilates Method of exercise strengthens the body, relaxes the mind and increases stamina, core strength, self-esteem, and quality sleep. A strong core can lead to improved learning. As children expend energy throughout the day, their ability to sit and/or stand and be attentive diminishes. A strong torso gives them a stable foundation allowing them to focus on the day’s workload. Pilates is perfect for all ages and fitness ability levels.


Wednesday

Music and Movement, 3:00-3:30

Instructor: TC Diamond Arts

Grades: PK3s & PK4s

This movement and music series is built to increase body awareness, promote emotional and social growth and develop early creative expression. In this six week program students will be learning basic songs, movement, instrumental play and rhythm. Please note that preschool programs will take place at 3pm and will end at 3:30.


Let’s Build It Engineering and Robotics

Dates: 1/10, 1/17, 1/24, 1/31, 2/7, 2/14

Instructor: Afterschool Enrichment Solutions

Grades: 1-5

Enter the fascinating world of robotics! In this STEAM program, students will design, build, and test their own robots. Projects include remote control cars, claws, cranes, crawlers and battle bots. Educational components include gear ratios, mechanical design, electronics and robotic engineering. No experience in robotics necessary to join.

Sports Club

Have you ever wanted to try learning soccer or lacrosse? Well than come on down to the Sports Club! Students will be having fun while learning new skills and being active. Being physically active is very beneficial for young students, it boosts self-esteem, improves social skills and promotes lifelong health!


Coding Club

Did you ever dream about creating your own video game? Well here is a chance for you to get started on that dream. In the Coding club, you will be using the Scratch coding language where anything is possible. You will learn what coding is, the concepts behind creating applications and the process of making one. Once you learn the basics of coding and get hooked, your creations are only limited to what your mind can dream up.

Instructor: After School Enrichment Solution

Grades: K-8

During the one-hour class, students will learn theater terms, learn about performance etiquette and good stage voice, participate in interactive theater games, and act in a short skit. This is an opportunity for students to have fun, express themselves, and interact with others within the context of a theater game or skit.

After School Activities Program 2015-2016

Our spring session begins the week of March 14, 2016. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. A minimum enrollment of three students is required for a class to run, unless otherwise noted. Some classes will have a maximum enrollment number, which will be listed with the course description. Student absences cannot be made up or refunded. In the event of school closure due to inclement weather, or a program teacher’s absence, one make-up class will be held at the end of the session. Each activity begins at 3:30pm in the dining room with a healthy snack provided by the program. At 3:45pm students will be picked up by the program teachers and escorted to their designated classrooms. Parent pick-up is promptly at 4:45pm in the main hallway. Crayola LA!

We celebrate Crayola and all the fabulous things you can imagine using their products! We create with Crayola watercolors, Model Magic modeling compound, chalk, tempera paints, special crayons, oil pastels, acrylic paints and more while exploring color, designing vertical garden sculptures, and building nocturnal animals. Bubbles will pop with drawing chalk! A still life will explode onto the page with construction paper, crayons, and watercolors. Oil pastels will inspire lively molas. Come have a colorful time creating your own Crayola art!

Advanced Coding

After the success of the fall’s after school Coding Workshop, Harbor is happy to announce an Advanced Coding Workshop this spring meant for experienced programmers who would like to continue work on their fall programming projects or tackle new and exciting challenges. Italian Club will explore Italian Language and Culture through fu learning and group activities, games, videos and role-play. We also learn exciting things about Italy and Italian children that are the same age as you.

Beginner French

French club will explore the French language and the way of life its locals. We will do this through great educational activities, fu group work, games, and more. Come discover French through songs, card games and craft activities. You will learn colors, par of the body among other vocabulary, hear funny stories and act a variety of poetry!

Sports Clinic presented by MyGym

Minimum enrollment: 10 students

Children will have a great time in MyGym's Sport Skill class as t learn the fundamentals of football and hockey. Three classes wi be dedicated to each sport with a focus on skill building, basic rules, teamwork, field layout and coordination. The children will also be provided with one take home worksheets per sport to color in and review with their family to enhance comprehension. Subsequent sessions will focus on other sports. The final week of each sport culminates in a "pint sized" game with a focus on FUN for all!

Work with Ms. DaLeo to prepare for the nationally known Kangaroo Math competition. This class will run as a 9-week session leading up to the Kangaroo Math competition in March.

Learn traditional martial arts from a Black Belt instructor, in a child-focused, fun environment. Skills development will include, goal setting, respect, self-control and focus. At the end of this 6- week session, students will earn a white belt and will be able to step into the spring clubs session for the second 6-week session where he/she will work towards earning a yellow belt. A small ceremony will end the second 6-week session where the yellow belts will be awarded.

Cannes @ Harbor: Imagine, Design and Produce Your First Short Film!

“Cannes @ Harbor” offers children a fun, hands-on experience with filmmaking through a broad variety of activities. Children will explore the silent film medium during one session, and 3D animation, rotoscoping, and Pixar animation in another. Other topics include “Unlikely Heroes of the Silver Screen,” making music for film and curating a soundtrack, the role of the action (“Mini-Method Acting”), and international films from Japan, Russia, Bulgaria, and France. Children will participate through activities, games and projects, including acting exercises, short film screenings, discussions, reenactments, “Location Scouting,” art direction and makeup, planning, casting, and directing their first short film.

Join Ms. Dayton in exploring and learning about some fun science projects. Each week students will do 1-2 experiments or projects in the science laboratory. They will learn the science behind each of these projects as they work on them. Some of the activities including making bouncy balls, making rock candy, creating invisible ink, and making recycled paper. Students will be able to take their work home to share with family and friends.

Kangaroo Math
Open to grades 1-3

Introduction to Robotics

This course is an introduction to robotics in which students will design, build, and program a robot with a partner and attempt to solve several “real-world” challenges. Munchable Math Madness

Combine math with cooking to create a delicious, mathematical product. Learn about graphing, categorizing, and counting, while following recipes to make snacks to eat at school and at home!

The Baking Coach
Open to grades K-8

During this workshop, students will learn how to make sweet and savory treats, including apple pie pops, focaccia bread, chocolate covered cannoli, cinnamon buns, Halloween cupcakes, and pumpkin bread pudding. Students will also learn how much and science apply to baking. All classes ask for 100% participation and students receive a disposable apron and take home recipe each week.
