Steam Education & Philosophy
The acronyms STEM and STEAM have existed in the world of education for the past twenty years, reaching thousands of school curricula as a means to promote the interdisciplinary approach to teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, with the "a" referencing and including the arts. The concept originated from the National Science Foundation and its national sponsorship of the improvement of American education.
At Harbor, we create the conditions in which students are immersed in our STEAM program as a means to highlight ways in which they can hone their ability to analyze data, make new connections, and learn to reason more abstractly.
What sets our STEAM curriculum apart from others is a deep emphasis on empathy. Harbor children are given opportunities to consider real problems – ones that they often choose – and issues that they are passionate about, and then are asked to develop strategies as well as solutions to make the world a better place.
