STEAM Center
STEAM (science-technology-engineering-arts-mathematics) is a philosophy of teaching that incorporates multiple disciplines through student centered, inquiry-based projects that develop real-world skills (STEAM philosophy officially adopted by Harbor on June 6, 2016). To continue to provide the best facilities for our burgeoning STEAM program and accommodate our expanding schedule and curriculum, we will construct a dedicated STEAM Center equipped with the most advanced technologies and equipment. The STEAM Center is being designed for collaboration, problem solving, creating, and designing, following the Design Thinking model: “Observe-Focus-Design-Create-Share.”
The STEAM Center facilities will include:
- Library/MakerSpace
- Robotics
- State-of-the-art technology including 3D printer
- Wood Shop
- Art Studio
- Lower School Science Laboratory
- Upper School Science Laboratory
- Kiln Room
Divisional Infrastructure
By restructuring and increasing classroom spaces, we will modernize our main building and create a school that flows seamlessly within and between school divisions and co-curricular classes. To enable optimal communication, collaboration, and instruction within each division, Early Childhood will be housed on the first floor, Lower School on the second floor, and Upper School will be on the third floor. This reorganization will allow for stronger interaction between similarly aged students and will facilitate collaboration among teachers within each division.
Miller Field
In the fall of 2018, Harbor Country Day School unveiled its newly renovated athletic field, which was fully funded by a generous gift from an anonymous donor. For more than 60 years, residents of St. James and surrounding communities have admired Harbor Country Day's picturesque setting on 11 beautiful acres on North Country Road. The renovation of Miller Field, named after Mrs. Charles Miller, Jr., a founder of Harbor Country Day and former member of the school’s board of trustees, is an enhancement not only for the school and its students, but for the community as well.
Welcome Area &
Conference Rooms
Harbor’s welcoming atmosphere begins with the first step inside our front door. A reception room with an adjacent Admission Office will present a favorable initial impression of Harbor to visiting prospective families. As we modernize the school’s infrastructure, creating a distinct and welcoming reception area for all visitors will reflect the warmth that is a hallmark of the Harbor experience. In addition, with the need for private meeting areas for faculty, administration, and the board of trustees, we will be constructing conference rooms for planning, reflection, and conferencing.
Deferred Maintenance
The historic Tulip Knoll mansion that houses Harbor Country Day School is in need of basic maintenance. With many thanks to an anonymous donor, these deferred maintenance projects are slated to begin in the summer of 2019.
